Two members of Shiloh Old Site, Yvonne Johnson Carter and Vernon L. Carter, Jr., have created a lavishly illustrated book on the art, music, and other ministries of Elder Anderson Johnson, a native of Virginia (1915–1998) who touched many lives through his preaching, teaching, art, and music.
The book, entitled A Man Inspired by God: The Art, Music, and Ministry of Elder Anderson Johnson, was published in 2020 and is available for purchase ($29.95) directly from Vernon L. Carter, PO Box 2122, Arlington, Virginia 22202. Or it can be ordered on-line from Gorham Printing at https://gorhamprinting.com/book/a-man-inspired-by-God.
Anderson Johnson’s life of service to others began at age 8, when he was caught in a cornfield in the middle of a terrible thunderstorm. Recovering after being struck by lightning and temporarily knocked unconscious, he determined that he would immediately begin preaching, helping to establish places of worship and learning in several locales from New York to Florida.
As the book points out, Elder Anderson Johnson ultimately became a free-spirited evangelist, a remarkable gospel musician, and a gifted self-taught visual artist. In later years, he centered his efforts at what he called Faith Mission in Arlington, Virginia.
Many of his thousands of paintings and visual creations are portrayed in this 166-page large-format volume, lovingly created by two individuals who knew and appreciated him and with whom he shared his personal story.
