Photograph: Memorial Day service at Shiloh Cemetery, 1962
This photo was taken at Shiloh Cemetery during the Rev. Lawrence A. Davies’ first year as pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site). He’s shown here standing at the podium. Dr. Phillip Y. Wyatt, a deacon at Shiloh Old Site and a leader in the local and state NAACP, can be seen at the far right, leaning his chin on his hand.
Shiloh Cemetery
This historic cemetery has long served the city of Fredericksburg’s three sister African American congregations: Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site), Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site), and Mount Zion Baptist Church of Fredericksburg. It’s located at the corner of Monument and Littlepage streets in the city of Fredericksburg. The entrance is on Monument Street.
The cemetery is managed by an independent board made up of representatives of all three congregations. All three congregations regularly supply financial support for the maintenance of the cemetery.
Unfortunately, there is no complete and accurate list of burials in the cemetery. Many graves were unmarked from the beginning, and records were sometimes kept in a rather informal manner.
An updated list of many burials, with birth and death years, can be found by clicking here. Keep in mind that the list is incomplete and may have inaccuracies. But it is the best list that is currently available.
